Cancer is a devastating disease, which affects millions of lives every year. Cervical cancer is a type of cancer that develops in a woman’s cervix (the entrance to the womb from the vagina).

What causes cervical cancer?

Almost all cases of cervical cancer are caused by the human papilloma virus (HPV).  HPV is a very common virus that can be passed on through any type of sexual contact with a man or a woman.

Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) is the name for a group of viruses that affect the moist membranes lining the body and the skin. There are more than 100 types of HPV, 30 of which can affect the genital area. The genital HPV infections are common and highly contagious.

The main areas that HPV affects include:

  • Cervix
  • Anus
  • Mouth and throat
